I had to make a concerted effort to remind myself that the chemo wasn’t the enemy, the cancer was. Your body tries to protect you from doing things that will hurt it and it is against your inbuilt defences to put yourself in such a situation. But there is no better way to attack the cancer. They just came to take a job off my to-do list. To make my pile of things I was worrying about that little bit smaller. It seems wrong to not immediately get up and offer a cup of tea in response to an offer of help, but learning to accept unconditional support when it is offered doesn't make you lazy. Just gratitude for their help is payment enough. So I can only imagine that being told the cancer is back and you'll need to restart chemo, that all that suffering is ahead of you, with no guarantee this time it will work.
