You go from being a patient looked after frequently by a team of professionals, all working their best for you, to being out in the world. You still check in with your team, but it feels like you are now on the outside of a bubble. And everything you have gone through has changed you. Physically, mentally, emotionally. The world around you continues like nothing has changed, when you know everything has changed. And it’s in that I found myself struggling to understand who I now was, and where I fitted in. It took a long time for me to establish what my new normal was and how I fitted into it. Only that the scans are coming back as clear. That there is no evidence of disease. Very small tumours won't show up in scans, so they can't say you no longer have cancer, only they can't see any. It is a fantastic stage to reach, but it also has its own challenges and emotions. Fear for how long NED will last, will it be only months? Could it even be years? Shocked you have survived to this point through all the treatments. Happy that you have made it, but fearful you'll be tempting fate if you celebrate it.
